KALAMAZOO, Mich. – HECO, Inc. is proud to announce its acquisition of Fife-Pearce Electric Company, a Detroit-based AC & DC electric motor service and repair provider. Effective July 2, 2025, the newly acquired company joins HECO’s 10 electric motor sales and service centers and hubs in Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Kentucky.

Offering complete industrial motor rebuilds, rewinding, and repair as well as unique offerings in magnetic chuck repair and controls, Fife-Pearce has been family-owned and operated since 1923. It serves major applications within the industrial, automation, and commercial sectors from a 30,197-square-foot facility on the North side of Detroit.

Based in Kalamazoo, Michigan, HECO was founded in 1959 by Terrell Hatfield and is now in its third generation of family ownership and operation. The company specializes in serving the power generation, steel and other metals, chemical processing, pharmaceutical, paper and pulp, wastewater and freshwater, aggregate and cement, coal mining, original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), and manufacturing industries with motor sales, repairs, and reliability-focused technology and services.

“We are excited to welcome the Fife-Pearce Electric Company team and their valued customers to the HECO family,” said Justin Hatfield, HECO President. “We are deeply grateful to current owner John Fracassa for trusting us to carry his legacy, and that of his late co-owner Brian Couey, forward.”

Together, the two companies provide a collective 168 years of expertise to the industrial motor and reliability industry and beyond. Fife-Pearce’s drive service and sales expertise align closely with services offered at HECO’s existing Metro Detroit, Kalamazoo, West Virginia, and Kentucky service centers, and the company’s unique magnetic chuck services allow HECO to enhance its offerings to existing customers.

The acquisition will also enable HECO to relocate its existing Metro Detroit Service Center at 25575 Glendale Street in Redford to Fife-Pearce’s facility at 20201 Sherwood Street in Detroit. This relocation is expected to be completed in the coming months.

“This partnership is also an opportunity to expand our Metro Detroit Service Center by moving our operations to the Fife-Pearce Electric Company location,” he added.

Dave Hazelrigg, HECO’s Metro Detroit Service Center Operations Manager, will oversee the consolidation of the combined Detroit locations. Employees of Fife-Pearce Electric Company will join the existing HECO Metro Detroit team in similar roles.

“Our customers, employees, and the Fife-Pearce legacy are in good hands with HECO,” Fracassa said. “As a family-owned business, their approach to business and customer service, as well as their industrial expertise, makes this partnership a great move for all involved.”

As part of HECO’s continued investment in the greater Detroit area, the company has also selected Detroit’s Fort Pontchartrain hotel as the host venue for this year’s RPM Symposium, taking place Sept. 23–24. The industry-focused event brings together thought leaders and reliability professionals to share insights and innovations in maximizing reliability of rotating equipment. KALAMAZOO, Mich. – HECO, Inc. is proud to announce that Warwood Armature Repair Company (Warwood) and its sales division, WARCO Sales Inc., have joined its existing electric motor sales and service centers and hubs in Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Kentucky. The newly acquired Wheeling, West Virginia-based location offers electric motor repair, sales, and field services similar to HECO’s but with a specialized focus on coal, steel, shale, and industrial customers in the Pennsylvania, Ohio, and West Virginia tri-state area.

Warwood also offers substantial gearbox repair for units up to 25 tons in weight. These services will continue at Warwood and be available to all HECO customers.

Effective Nov. 15, 2024, the new partnership offers a combined 162 years of experience in the reliable and efficient use of electric motors and rotating equipment to additional industries and geographic areas and creates a unique wealth of DC motor knowledge and capabilities.

Based in Kalamazoo, Michigan, HECO was founded in 1959 by Terrell Hatfield. Today it specializes in serving the power generation, steel and other metals, chemical processing, pharmaceutical, paper and pulp, wastewater and freshwater, aggregate and cement, original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), and manufacturing industries.

Warwood was established in 1927 by Raymond V. Thalman and Lawrence J. Schmitt who built a business rewinding armatures for local coal mines in Wheeling, West Virginia. In 1974, a new division known as WARCO Sales, Inc. was created to focus on new motor sales.

Prior to becoming part of the HECO umbrella, Warwood was family-owned and managed by the Thalman family for four generations.

Justin Hatfield, grandson of HECO’s founder and the company’s current president, said, “As a third-generation, family-owned company, HECO is very honored to be trusted with carrying Warwood Armature forward. We are happy to welcome the Warwood team to the HECO family and excited to bring a bit of HECO to the Wheeling and greater Pittsburgh community.”

Warwood President William Thalman will serve as Operations Manager and all current employees will continue in similar roles and capacities, respectively.

HECO will continue Warwood’s long-standing relationship with the IBEW Local #141, which represents the Wheeling, West Virginia, workforce, and is committed to maintaining a strong, productive relationship with its newly acquired union workforce.

“Joining HECO was the best decision possible for the Warwood team,” William Thalman said. “Much like our family and company, the Hatfield family and HECO care about their employees, take pride in doing a job right the first time, and bring an immense amount of integrity and skill to the maintenance, repair, and sale of electric motors and rotating equipment.”

Hatfield added, “HECO as well as Warwood customers can expect the same level of service and knowledge from familiar faces going forward. Together, we will also share our respective areas of expertise throughout our combined footprint and capabilities.”

For the time being, the new service center will retain its original name and operate as a division of HECO.

As one of three partners in the firm, MRG Solutions, LLC (d/b/a Skyler) HECO is proud to share the following release.

MRG Solutions, LLC (d/b/a Skyler) to Acquire Relayr’s Skyler Rotate Business

As of September 30. 2024, Relayr has agreed to sell all rights to its Skyler Rotate product and related existing business to MRG Solutions, LLC, who will transact business under the name “Skyler.” The sale also includes job offers to various Rotate employees, helping to ensure full knowledge transfer to MRG Solutions, LLC.

Jessica Poliner, CEO of Relayr, expressed her excitement about the future of Rotate under MRG Solutions’ ownership: “We are fortunate to have worked closely with some of the operating partners of MRG Solutions for years prior as we developed the Rotate product. We are certain that MRG Solutions’ domain expertise and knowledge will add tremendous value to the product development and customer needs, adding to the scalability of the owners for the Rotate product: passionate about the technology, customers, and employees and well-informed on the industry.”

Rotate is not just a remote condition-monitoring solution but a holistic approach to deliver transformative equipment reliability and performance, consisting of four key value drivers: Asset Health Monitoring, Asset Inspection and Reporting, Service and Domain Expertise, and Performance Guarantee. The new company, Skyler was formed specifically for the Rotate solution and will be focused on leveraging its domain expertise coupled with this technology to deliver transformative equipment reliability and performance.

“MRG Solutions, or as we call ourselves ‘Skyler,’ will continue to build upon what Relayr initiated with the Rotate product. Skyler is owned by a group of partners from the electromechanical industry who share a common vision to leverage disruptive technology to create actionable insights for industrial solutions. We view Rotate as a top-of-the-line technology, which is now backed by one-of-a-kind service network across North America,” said Justin Hatfield, President of HECO and one of the Skyler partners. “We are bringing an incredible team from Relayr over to Skyler and are excited to combine our domain expertise with the technology to benefit our clients.”

MRG Solutions ownership is comprised of three US-based electromechanical companies: Energy Management Corporation, HECO Inc., and Northwest Electric. The owners will be supported by SPARK Business Works on the technology. Initially, Skyler will operate with support from its ownership organizations but will be an independently run organization.

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – Justin Hatfield, President of HECO Inc., is one of 34 finalists for Ernst & Young LLP’s (EY US) Entrepreneur Of The Year® 2024 Michigan and Northwest Ohio Award.

Now in its 38th year, Entrepreneur Of The Year is the preeminent competitive business award for leaders who disrupt markets, revolutionize sectors, and have a transformational impact on lives.

Hatfield was one of 34 regional entrepreneurs from 30 companies selected as finalists by an independent panel of judges. Candidates were evaluated based on their demonstration of building long-term value through entrepreneurial spirit, purpose, growth, and impact, among other core contributions and attributes.

“I am extremely honored to be named as a finalist for Entrepreneur Of The Year by Ernst & Young’s recognition. My fellow nominees and the companies they represent are great examples of successful leadership and teamwork,” Hatfield said.

“This nomination and my success would not be possible without the entire HECO team’s dedication and willingness to continually evolve our business and reach new milestones. I thank my team for their commitment and support,” Hatfield added.

Entrepreneur Of The Year honors many different types of business leaders for their ingenuity, courage, and entrepreneurial spirit. The program celebrates original founders who bootstrapped their business from inception or who raised outside capital to grow their company, transformational CEOs who infused innovation into an existing organization to catapult its trajectory, and multigenerational family business leaders who reimagined a legacy business model to fortify it for the future.

Hatfield has served as HECO’s President since 2018. His father, Mark Hatfield, serves as the company’s CEO Emeritus and his grandfather, Terrell Hatfield, founded the company in 1959.

Regional award winners will be announced on Thursday, June 20, during a special celebration and will become lifetime members of an esteemed community of Entrepreneur Of The Year alumni from around the world. The winners will then be considered by the National judges for the Entrepreneur Of The Year National Awards, which will be presented in November at the annual Strategic Growth Forum®, one of the nation’s most prestigious gatherings of high-growth, market-leading companies.

Founded in 1986, Entrepreneur Of The Year has celebrated more than 11,000 ambitious visionaries who are leading successful, dynamic businesses in the US, and it has since expanded to nearly 80 countries and territories globally.

The US program consists of 17 regional programs whose panels of independent judges select the regional award winners every June. Those winners compete for national recognition at the Strategic Growth Forum in November where National finalists and award winners are announced. The overall National winner represents the United States at the World Entrepreneur Of The Year competition.

HECO Inc. (HECO), a company that helps industrial plants utilize more dependable electric motors and equipment, is excited to announce that it has acquired Alran, LLC (Alran) of Redford Township, MI. Alran was founded in 2005 by Allen and Randy Altman.

Since its inception, Alran has provided electric motor repair and rewinding services for industrial clients in the metropolitan Detroit area with a focus on motors up to 500HP. “When I first met Randy and toured the shop, I could tell instantly that Alran has a great, experienced, team and utilizes the correct equipment to serve their clients” stated Justin Hatfield, President of HECO. “It was obvious to me from the first interaction that there was a cultural and strategic fit between the two companies. I’m excited for us to have the opportunity to build on the great business that Alran already is!”

Randy Altman, President of Alran, added “HECO was a great choice for us to transition our team and customers to. They are motor people and that was an important factor for us. Also, being part of a larger company will allow us to focus on what we do well and have a deep bench of motor and equipment knowledge and experience that we can draw from. Our customers will be excited to see all the additional services, offerings, and increased capabilities that we can now bring to them as part of HECO.”

Alran will now operate as HECO’s “Metro Detroit Service Center” at its current location on Glendale in Redford Township, MI. This location will be one of three service centers that HECO has along with Kalamazoo, MI and Lexington, KY.

Randy Altman will serve as Operations Manager for HECO in the location. Hatfield added that “It was crucial for us to have Randy join the HECO team after the acquisition. His knowledge and experience will be a crucial part of the success of our new Metro Detroit Service Center in the coming years.” In addition to Randy, all other current employees will be retaining their positions within HECO.

HECO is a third-generation family business that was started as an electric motor repair shop in Kalamazoo, MI in 1959. HECO has grown over the years and now through a mix of Repair, Product Sales, Predictive, and Equipment Management helps industrial facilities to see what’s going on with their equipment, get rid of issues as they come up, and stop the issues from happening again. This provides HECO’s clients with peace of mind and confidence that their motors and equipment will operate effectively, have longevity, and reduce total cost of ownership.

Alran will mark HECO’s sixth acquisition in the last ten years as it continues to push towards growth while remaining focused on the midwestern-USA.

HECO has partnered with relayr, a provider of software solutions, to move from a time-based preventive maintenance or route-based Predictive maintenance solution to one that is more outcomes-based, with the aim of moving toward equipment-as-a-service models. The publication Plant Services recently wrote an article about it that you can read below or by visiting the publication.

For more than 60 years, third-generation family business HECO has been a leader in electric motor maintenance and repairs and system overhauls. Some recent acquisitions and partnerships have begun to significantly evolve HECO’s business model and ultimately, its relationship with its manufacturing customers.

Most recently, its partnership with relayr, a provider of software solutions, has started moving the business from a time-based preventive maintenance or route-based predictive maintenance solution, to one that is more outcomes-based, with hope to move toward equipment-as-a-service models. The key to this business model for industry, in the case of a motor repair company, is truly aligning the business goals with the goals of its customers.

Generally, in the motor repair world, if your customer loses, you win. Justin Hatfield, president of HECO, had a different idea for the future of the motor repair business. “Something I have always struggled with in our industry is that we would win when our customers would lose,” Hatfield says. A motor failed; a plant is down; it’s losing money and can’t operate. “And we’re getting that win from that repair or that sale,” Hatfield says. “I never really liked that, and I said, there has to be a better way to look at this, to where we can truly align mutual benefit to each other.”

Hatfield had been struggling with that dynamic for a number of years, trying to figure out how to find a meeting place for company and customer goals. The new partnership with relayr has allowed them together to move in that direction.

HECO started as a traditional motor repair shop in 1959. Based in Kalamazoo, MI, it serves primarily the Midwestern U.S. Focused on the maintenance and repair of rotating equipment for heavy industry, HECO finds itself “anywhere where there’s smokestacks. Those are our types of customers,” Hatfield says, such as cement, paper and chemical plants, steel mills, power plants, plastics, water, wastewater and pharmaceutical facilities, and general manufacturing.

Repairing rotational motor.

“We do truly want to find a unique way to do things versus just repeating the same thing over and over, as it’s traditionally been done,” Hatfield says. This is evident in the company’s transition over the years, starting from repair and maintenance and adding equipment sales and equipment management services into the mix. Over the last decade, HECO has moved more and more into predictive maintenance and condition monitoring services, starting with the acquisition of Predictive Maintenance Services Inc. in 2013 and Integrated Maintenance Technologies in 2017, as well as Zeluff Associates, a local consulting firm which blended into the existing PdM team.

HECO’s initial move into PdM and IoT-based solutions, which Hatfield described as “clunky,” was still leading the company in the right direction. With a route-based approach, HECO was trying to catch failures for its customers before they happened, so it was a logical transition, Hatfield says, “To say, how do we get better at this?”

As the company transitioned to more advanced systems early on, it was still more about selling hardware, the sensors and equipment needed for predictive maintenance data analysis. But the industry more and more is moving toward software solutions and less capital-intensive business models. Hatfield admitted that seeing the company’s way from a hardware-based world to following a new path wasn’t always easy to see the way, but relayr helped clarify this new world for HECO.

The relationship is very much based on value creation for the customer, which is what Hatfield was in search of from the beginning. They both have solutions to sell and hardware to match, if needed, but the selling process and customer interaction has changed significantly. “It truly changed the way we interact with customers quite a bit,” Hatfield says. “It became less transactional, so it’s not about an individual order or an individual purchase order. It’s truly about, where can we bring value?”

This outcomes-based approach to equipment management and working with customers from soup to nuts is at the core of what drives relayr solutions. “I think it is taking a longer term view to the market and certainly to the customers as well, to be able to support them throughout the lifecycle,” says Jessica Poliner, CEO of relayr.

The company, founded in 2013, works in a variety of customers and offers solutions to help industry make the digital transformation. Recently, relayr has worked to narrow its focus down to some key areas: rotating machinery; a product for industrial companies in the elevator and door loading space; and more broadly with equipment-as-a-service business models.

“Our currency is really the data,” Poliner says. Its IIoT technology and services are all powered by data, customized and particular for each customer. The shift toward data-driven maintenance is supporting new business models, as industrial companies shift from capital expenditure (CapEx) to operating expenses- (OpEx) based offerings.

Together HECO and relayr have launched APOLLO, a comprehensive condition-based monitoring solution focused on asset health monitoring, asset inspection and reporting, with HECO service and domain expertise that allows asset performance guarantees. APOLLO uses relayr’s Skyler, an IoT-enabled predictive maintenance solution, and the partners can customize a solution for each customer.

Where appropriate, facilities can also still use more traditional maintenance strategies. The entire facility and an asset map of the plant will guide the maintenance strategies, based on those assets that can run to failure, and those that would benefit from preventive maintenance, predictive maintenance, and remote monitoring. “There are assets in every plant that can fit into those different boxers, so our approach with APOLLO is to design a system that makes sense value-wise for our clients,” Hatfield says. By analyzing a plant’s entire asset inventory, comprehensive maintenance strategies, and production costs, customers receive a value proposal, or the potential return on investment, based on the system and value the APOLLO product can create long term. “I’ll tell you that sales cycle is completely different from anything HECO has ever done,” Hatfield says.

Currently, the payment structure for the APOLLO solution is primarily subscription-based, but there is flexibility, where customers have other needs, Hatfield says. The move from more route-based approaches to more outcome-based business models is a natural transition for IIoT solutions, and that will likely be the future for the HECO/relayr partnership and products. More and more companies are understanding the value of as-a-service models for manufacturing. “I typically find that if we describe it as OpEx, they don’t necessarily understand,” Hatfield says. As with any new idea or innovation, it requires some education, especially for facilities that are used to the consistency of a route-based service and paying every month or every quarter for equipment analysis.

Making the digital transformation can also be hardware- or capital-intensive, if the facility needs new sensors and equipment to collect the needed data for analysis. “But that’s not what end users want,” Hatfield says. “They don’t want more hardware to maintain.” With an OpEx-model, HECO does that maintenance, and when technology is obsolete, it gets replaced.

Relayr also has experience with driving this change in other industries. Poliner says relayr has deployed equipment-as-a-service models with other partners, where customers have a pay-per-part payment structure, and relayr is exploring a pay per pack structure with a packaging customer. APOLLO is a good stepping stone for that change with HECO and the electric motor industry.

“We aren’t talking about sensors anymore. We aren’t talking about hardware. We’re truly talking about the data. We’re talking about value that the customer can have from that data,” Hatfield says.

Poliner says of the journey toward digital transformation, the overall commitment is very important. “A lot of companies talk about needing to do something digital or leveraging sensors or having data analytics or any of those pieces,” Poliner says. “It really is an alignment on business objectives and not just doing a digital transformation to do a digital transformation because that’s the trendy thing to do, per se, or Industry 4.0 or whatever the buzzwords are in the market. It needs to go much further than that. And I think that’s part of the good fortune that we have with a partner like HECO,” Poliner says.

Relayr, a global provider of risk-free digital transformations that help organizations achieve their target business outcomes, has partnered with electric motor and industrial service company HECO to launch its first outcomes-based product line: Apollo.

HECO’s Apollo product line, which was powered by relayr’s Skyler solution delivers transformative equipment reliability and performance. Apollo is not just remote condition-based monitoring but a holistic approach consisting of four key value drivers:

  • Asset Health Monitoring. Identify issues before they occur with continuous remote condition-based monitoring from relayr to provide active monitoring of industrial assets
  • Asset Inspection and Reporting. Industry leading detailed asset inspection, analysis, and detailed reporting
  • HECO Service and Domain Expertise. Tailored services for customer-specific needs including repair, replacement, field service, predictive maintenance, and equipment management
  • Performance Guarantee. Proactive, data driven asset maintenance alerts provide a foundation for asset performance guarantees such as guaranteeing against unalerted failures

“For more than 60 years, HECO has continually leveraged a solution-driven, customer-focused methodology to maintenance, repair and overhaul of electric motors and systems,” said Lou Leuzzi, Vice President of AMER Sales for relayr. “Relayr’s value-based approach to leveraging Industrial Internet of Things products such as Skyler to address customer pain points has made for a dynamic relationship with HECO, and we know Apollo will raise the bar in terms of customer satisfaction.”

The launch of Apollo is just the beginning of a new portfolio of products and services stemming from the partnership between HECO and relayr. Looking ahead, HECO and relayr will expand Apollo’s capabilities beyond condition monitoring to include verified ROI, warrantable asset performance and more.

“Inspired by the Greek God of prophecy, knowledge and truth, the name Apollo aptly speaks to the product’s ability to provide enhanced clarity into system performance that enables users to minimize unplanned downtime, reduce maintenance and repair costs, and optimize production levels,” said Justin Hatfield, President for HECO. “Apollo is just the first step in HECO’s digital evolution as we continue to fundamentally transform how we do business for the better while and putting our customers’ needs at the center of those efforts.”

HECO is excited to announce that one of it’s team members, Doug Moore, was presented with the EASA (Exceptional Achievement Service Award) at the 2021 Electrical Apparatus Service Association (EASA) Convention in Ft. Worth, TX.

The Exceptional Achievement Service Award recognizes individuals who have provided exceptional service to the electrical apparatus sales and service industry. Individuals nominated must have rendered exceptional service to the electrical apparatus industry on a local, national or international basis. Nominations must include specific reasons for the nomination and be accompanied by at least three corroborating letters of recommendation. The final selection of the single award recipient was at the sole discretion of the International Nominating Committee of EASA. Since the award’s inception in 1997, there have only been 23 other recipients.

Doug Moore presented with EASA award

Doug has been in the electro-mechanical industry for over 40 years. An active EASA member, Doug served as EASA International Chairman from 2014-2015, traveling for weeks at a time and to Europe twice for the association. As chairman, Doug brought the internationalization of EASA to fruition. “One of the best things about EASA is meeting people from all around the world and learning their experiences and perspectives,” he notes. “Our challenges might be different, but the more we talk, we find we face similar issues and we can learn from each other’s successes.” Doug served EASA as Regional Director beginning in 2009 and on EASA’s Technical Education Committee from 1998-2018. Doug is very active in his local chapter of EASA in Louisville, where he is a lifelong board member. Doug pointed out that there was no training for motor shop employees. He was then contacted by the chairman of the Technical Education Group to help address this. Doug worked to develop a training program from EASA Vo-‐Tech to the Fundamentals Series, 5 volumes of which are now used internationally.

In May of 2021, HECO Acquired Doug’s life-long business, Kentucky Service Company to form HECO Kentucky Service Company. Doug has transitioned into a Technical Advisor role where he can continually advise clients on electric motor and pump issues/problems. “When it comes to helping our clients, I’m committed to finding the root cause failure for an issue so that it is fixed for good,” said Moore.
